Hi Lucy and many thanks. I have had a few false starts on projects to improve the map. My current interest is to work in a decolonisation direction – what learning theories have arisen elsewhere in the world? Where are the women? How has this influenced the quality of ideas?
The source of the map is made with Cmap which you can find here: https://cmap.ihmc.us/ and the file is on one of the IHMC servers:
IHMC Public Cmaps (3)/Users (create your own folder…)/Hotel EU project (a pig to navigate to…)
It is straightforward to make a copy of the latest version, and then use Cmap to improve your copy. Richard

I hope this message finds you well.
Your map is a key resource on the PGCHE that I teach for helping participants understand the many learning theories out there. I see from the comments above that you plan to create an updated version, including more theories. Are you still planning to do this? And might the new version be in a format that others can add to, like we can with a Wiki?
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Lucy

Learning theories describe “how students absorb, process, and retain knowledge during learning.” The number of different theories can be a bit overwhelming but we’re going to focus on a few of them, especially in relation to learning in the ‘digital age’ (If you’d like to see the expanse of learning theories over time, check out this graphic created by Richard Millwood from his blog) […]

I visited this great resource you built. As a contribution, it would be convenient to navigate the links in each conceptual map node at the interactive site again. Here some examples that you may decide to update.

Each one with a different take on how students learn. Learning theories describe “how students absorb, process, and retain knowledge during learning.” The amount of different theories can make it feel like swimming through treacle! I am currently studying a postgraduate course in Lifelong Learning.

Can I ask why Mezirow’s Transformative Learning Theory in not on your map, which by all other means is very impressive indeed?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your impressive work. I do have one question, however, about the what seems to be an omission in your collection of theories relevant to learning.

My question points to the decision not to include self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2017) in your overview with connection to psychology? It certainly has a lot to say about education and learning, as well as a focus on language learning (Noels et al. , 2003). There are decades of convincing empirical research to support its findings, and it is relevant to not only learning, but motivation and well-being. A missed opportunity to make an important link to learning with a robust theory that is current and relevant to our field.

I was wondering if you had heard of Saadi Lahlou’s Installation Theory, and if so if you are inclined to include it in the learning theories map? More information on Saadi’s theory can be found at:
http://www.lse.ac.uk/PBS/Research/Research-archive/Installation-theory-by-Saadi-Lahlou

Btw. I think the map is a very important work!

Best regards,
– Ade

ps: The installation theory work, seems to have come into prominence shortly after your Ph.D work or about the same time.

Unfortunately, the link to this has now broken and we are unable to source the correct link. Are you able to advise and provide a link to the interactive version please? This is quite urgent as it an asset used in our teaching module material. Look forward to hearing from you quite urgently.

Thanks Kris: systems thinking and the concept of learning organisation are clearly valuable perspectives on the framework of learning activity providing analytical support to the manager of an organisation.

What guided my chart, although I do not claim complete consistency, was the question ‘How does change occur in the mind of the learner?’ The broader question of how we should organise education, whether formal or informal, clearly overlaps, but was not the main purpose of this particular chart, but is no less important to address.

I am not expert or even close to that in this field. I know bits and pieces about the learning organisation. One of the key topics that I am familiar in terms of enterprises and organisation is through Peter Senge’s “The fifth discipline”, who cover Systems Thinking as well.
I was wondering is there a reason why Senge or Systems Thinking or learning organisation has been omitted here. Sorry if this is a stupid question to ask.

Thank you for this great visual overview to the learning theories,
It is worth looking at the theory of “Constructive Alignment” by John Biggs and maybe incorporate it in the next version.
